Detailed Safari
Day 1: Travel to Volcanoes Area & Overnight Near the Park
Start the day early from Kigali or Musanze and drive toward Volcanoes National Park. The road winds through beautiful Rwandan countryside and dramatic volcanic landscapes. When you reach the park area, settle into your chosen lodge in Kinigi or Musanze. You may relax, take a gentle walk around the lodge surroundings, enjoy dinner and rest well ahead of the trekking adventure.
Accommodation options (Night 1):
- Budget: Kinigi Guest House — simple rooms, close to the park headquarters.
- Mid-range: Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge — comfortable cottages with great views and good amenities.
- Luxury: Bisate Lodge — high-end eco-villa experience with exceptional comfort and stunning volcanic scenery.
Meal plan for Day 1: Dinner (Breakfast provided next morning).
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Return
Wake up early and drive to the park headquarters for a briefing from the ranger guides. After your group assignment, you begin hiking into the forest. The trek may take anywhere from a couple of hours to several depending on the gorilla family’s movements. Once you find the gorillas, spend one magical hour quietly observing them — watching silverbacks, mothers, playful juveniles and infants. After the trek, return to the trailhead and drive back to Kigali or connect to your next destination.
Accommodation: None (unless you choose an additional night).
Meal plan for Day 2: Breakfast at lodge, lunch after trek or en-route, dinner depending on travel plans.
Best Time to Do the Safari
The most ideal trekking conditions occur during the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — when the trails are less slippery and weather is more predictable. Gorilla trekking, however, is available year-round.
